Duke is an old dog with a stiff hip, a gray muzzle and a life he wouldn't change. He has his yard, his morning rounds, his cushion on the back porch and the fat orange cat next door who pretends not to see him. Then one morning the house fills with new footsteps, and a small boy in rocket pajamas walks out the back door. Marcus is four. He barely speaks, he wakes crying in the dark, and he watches the grown ups like weather he is trying to learn. Duke doesn't know what a foster placement is, or a hearing date, or why the woman of the house keeps checking the gate. He only knows that the boy needs someone, and that he has always known how to stay. A quiet, warm story about an old dog, a frightened child and the family that grows up around them, told one ordinary day at a time.
