Chapter 16

The scent of pine incense lingered faintly in his room, drifting from an old burner near the corner shelf. Li Chen sat by the window, letting the late morning sun warm his arms as his thoughts returned to the warnings about body cultivation.
"Only after reaching the third stage of Body Refinement should one begin the Stone Body ritual," the texts had cautioned.
But his situation was not ordinary.
His muscles, even at the Silver Muscle Stage, held strength that rivaled Heaven-grade third-level cultivators. The dual bloodlines pulsing in his body had refined him far beyond expectation.
Even so, he hesitated, not from doubt, but from respect. This wasn’t a path one walked blindly.
He stood, pulled on a clean robe, and walked toward his mother’s chambers.
Wei Lin looked up from a scroll as he entered. She studied his face for only a moment before speaking.
“You’ve decided?”
Li Chen nodded. “Yes. I believe I’m ready.”
She folded the scroll with care. “Come. It’s time.”
The path led deep into the estate, through a winding stairwell behind the ancestral shrine. At the bottom, a hidden chamber opened like the mouth of an ancient beast, its breath stale with forgotten energy.
Stone walls pulsed faintly with etched formation patterns. The floor was engraved with Qi veins that glowed with residual elemental essence. In the center stood a circular jade platform, slightly raised, its edges flared like petals.
On a silver tray at the side, five jade vials of beast blood sat beside the Blood Fruit, still whole, its crimson skin veined with golden lines.
Wei Lin spoke as she placed the tray near the altar.
“Once the ritual begins, there is no pause. If your body fails, it will tear you apart from within.”
Li Chen met her gaze, unflinching.
“I’m ready.”
Wei Lin activated the formation with a single press of her palm to the platform’s edge.
The stone veins lit one by one, cascading from the walls toward the jade altar. A hum filled the room, low and resonant. The air grew dense with rising Qi.
She poured the beast bloods into the glowing grooves, each essence absorbed into the formation.
Then, with practiced care, she sliced open the Blood Fruit, revealing a pulsing, golden-red pulp. She set the heart of the fruit gently upon Li Chen’s bare chest.
He removed his robe and sat cross-legged on the altar, breathing slow and deep.
The mist from the fruit rose like incense smoke, curling into the air and drawing the surrounding blood Qi toward his body.
The ritual had begun.
It started as warmth.
Then came the fire.
Five elemental beast essences, all aligned to fire or thunder, rushed into his veins like molten river and crackling storm. His body convulsed. Muscles locked. Tendons twisted.
The silver glow that once marked his tempered muscle began to fracture, shattering under the assault of purer energy. Lines of heat danced across his skin like glowing cracks.
He clenched his teeth.
Pain is not the enemy. Weakness is.
The Blood Fruit's essence activated, spreading slowly through his bones and sinews. It worked as a binder, holding the chaos together, drawing fire and thunder into rhythm.
In his inner vision, the silver threads within his muscles began to darken, taking on a stone-like luster.
This was the threshold.
The beginning of a new realm: the Stone Body, Initial Stage.
Then came the inner war.
His dantian flared with life. Two forces awakened.
First, the demonic bloodline: hot, wild, forceful. It pushed, demanded, consumed. Raw strength surged into his limbs.
But the second bloodline rose more quietly. It moved like shadow over water, subtle, flowing, coiling.
And then... it changed the pain.
He saw flashes in his mind, serpent strikes, forest echoes, the crimson tree in a dark sky.
Pain struck again, but this time, he anticipated it. He felt the Qi spike before it moved, sensed the tension in his own nerves before they fired.
His perception sharpened. Reflexes adjusted in real time. His mind and body aligned in a dance between pain and mastery.
“This... is perception. Prediction. Not just survival. This is control.”
The demonic bloodline forged the body, while the second bloodline refined the interface: mind, response, control.
Then came the surge.
A shockwave of energy burst from within.
His body glowed briefly with dim, solidified Qi. The silver muscle deepened to dense grey, stone forged through fire.
✦ Technique Unlocked: Primordial Body Scripture, Volume I
From outside the formation, Wei Lin watched the jade lines ripple and dim. Her eyes softened.
Most collapse here. But he... refined the pain.
The platform’s glow faded. The blood energy had been spent.
Li Chen fell backward, unconscious, skin steaming from residual heat.
Wei Lin stepped forward and cast a cooling Qi shield over his body. She let him rest.
In the darkness of unconsciousness, the crimson tree returned.
Its branches stretched across the sky, thick and ancient. This time, they didn’t just pulse. They reached for him. Not to grasp, but to beckon.
A whisper echoed, not in words, but in feeling.
Then, a memory not his own.
He stood inside it.
The sun beat down on a rocky cliff.
Before him stood a boy, around twelve, clad in a sleeveless green vest, black leggings, and a weighted sash. Sweat poured from his brow. His fists were bruised. His voice cracked with effort.
“Gate of Opening, release!”
A surge of wind burst from his back. His veins bulged. His movements blurred.
The boy ran up the wall, flipped, and struck a boulder hard enough to fracture it.
“Gate of Healing, release!”
His injuries faded. His stamina renewed. He struck again, harder. Stronger.
Li Chen felt every motion as if it were his own, technique practiced a thousand times, not for power alone, but for mastering the self.
As the vision faded, a whisper echoed from the dream:
“Eight...”
Then darkness.
He woke hours later.
His skin felt... heavier. His breath deeper. But not sluggish.
He rose slowly and punched forward.
The air cracked.
Power moved not only through his limbs, but with his limbs.
His muscles no longer fought his motion. They enhanced it.
Each strike carried not just strength, but weight.
The force was anchored. Like moving the world with each blow.
He flexed, testing. Stone. Yet still fast. Still mine.
And then, the dream.
The tree. The boy. The technique.
He remembered it clearly now. Not just the motion. The method.
"Eight gates... That was the name."
The technique had etched itself into his memory like it had always belonged there.
"It was passed to me, not by blood, but by bond."
Eight Gates
A body technique that forces open the gates within. Known so far: the Gate of Opening and the Gate of Healing.
He didn’t know how. But it felt right.
Wei Lin entered and watched him quietly.
“You succeeded.”
He nodded.
“But that was only the first step,” she said. “The Blood Fruit and beast bloods refined only ten percent of what your body holds now. The rest is stored within your meridians and bones, waiting.”
Li Chen raised an eyebrow.
“You’ll need to injure yourself. Recover. Train. Break. Rebuild.”
She stepped closer.
“Only then will you complete the Stone Body.”
He nodded slowly, absorbing every word.
“And keep it hidden,” she added. “Few understand body cultivators, fewer still understand dual-path cultivators.”
“Some respect what they see,” she said. “Most fear what they do not.”
Li Chen looked down at his hands, stone-hardened, but still warm with life.
“The body is the sword. The blood is the sheath. Now... I must learn to wield both.”
